What we do
We are a group of like-minded people who enjoy the investigative nature of research and exploring social history. We share our family history, our brick walls, red herrings, and web sites. We provide help in researching the many sources of genealogy information, including:
- Civil Registration and Birth/Marriage/Death Certificates;
- The General Register Office;
- The International Genealogy Index;
- Local Record Offices and Parish Registers;
- Census records;
- Voting registers;
- Family History Societies;
- Magazines and newspapers;
- Trade Directories;
- Monumental Inscriptions (e.g. gravestones);
- Wills and Administration Orders.
We also arrange trips to conferences and to records offices, and have occasional visiting speakers (for which an extra charge applies).
Reports
July 2008
We have had a successful year with good attendances culminating with a very enjoyable and informative talk by Ann Knowles about the history of mapping and the use of old maps to help us with ‘searching for our ancestors’. The meetings have been lively and although we appreciate we have much to learn, we are gaining in knowledge and sharing ideas and have had interesting discussions.
The next meeting will be on October 9th 2008 at 10 am. at the Castle Street Centre, when we will report on our successful summer research (or the wrong trees barked up). On 13th November Chris Payne will talk about the tools used in researching Military History. Nothing has been decided for 11th December but is sure to include homemade mince pies.

March 2008
We meet once a month on Thursday morning at 10 a.m. at the Castle Street Centre. We are able to access the Internet with the help of the WiFi connection at Castle Street.
There are about 20 members who are all very keen and we pass on ideas to each other and share our highs and lows of Family Research.
On March 1st we made a visit to the Latter-day Saints at Chorley. Their Family History Section has a remarkably large collection of information and the staff are very kind and helpful.
Our last meeting before the summer break is 8th May and we restart 9th October (not September as previously advised).

November 2007
We have welcomed several new members this autumn.
Joan Lunt arranged for our October meeting to be held in Kendal Library where 16 members enjoyed a packed two hours hearing from Jackie Fay about the resources for Family Research including old maps, newspapers, microfiche etc., through to the present day with websites available on the library computers.
Two of our new members have Wifi Laptop Computers and the facilities at Castle Street Centre allow them to access the Internet during our meetings which is a great help.
In December Gill Carrick will give an illustrated talk on “How old postcards can help illustrate your family history”. And in the New Year Joan is arranging a visit to The Latter Day Saints at Chorley.
