What we do

We are a group of like-minded people who enjoy the investigative nature of research and exploring social history. We share our family history, our brick walls, red herrings, and web sites. We provide help in researching the many sources of genealogy information, including:

We also arrange trips to conferences and to records offices, and have occasional visiting speakers (for which an extra charge applies).

Reports

July 2010

A visit to the Record Office in Kendal in May was an interesting experience for members who had not been to a Record Office before.
It was good to hear about the visit at the June meeting.
There is no meeting in September due to the Westmorland Show but we will be at Town Hall Coffee Morning on 1st September, hope to see you there.
The 14th October meeting will be a resume of our findings during the summer break, I will hopefully bring the computers so bring your questions.
The November 11th meeting is Remembrance Day so bring along appropriate memorabilia.
On 9th December there will be a visit to Kendal Library for a talk by Jackie Faye the Local Studies Librarian. There will still be a meeting at Castle Street for those who have been to the Library before, and again I will bring the computers.

Ann Knowles

March 2010
A big ‘thank you’ to Stella Booth for her Coordinators role over many years. ‘Thank you’ to Ann for stepping into Stella’s shoes.
Due to the ice in January our meeting was postponed until March. In February members shared documents which helped in their research. In March Chris Payne and Ken Tulley gave their very interesting illustrated talks about the First World War and in April Chris Payne talked about 19th century newspapers - this was a joint meeting with the Local History Group. For the May meeting half the group will visit the Kendal Record Office while the remainder will meet at Castle Street to discuss their research. And in June we will have a report from the group who went to the Record Office and any follow-up successes.
Our grateful thanks to all those who have contributed to meetings making a successful year. We return in October with more talks and visits.

November 2009
“Wills” was the subject for our November meeting when Ann Knowles introduced us to the information which can be gleaned from old Wills e.g. discovering ‘lost’ members of the family. Another member (who will remain anonymous) was puzzled by a member of the family being barred from any inheritance, and eventually discovered that the said person had served two years in prison, the details of the crime committed not being suitable for the pages of the SLU3A Newsletter!
The September Coffee Morning saw another influx of new members so we start the New Year with a repeat of “World War 1” with Chris Payne and Ken Tulley, showing how much can be learnt from the insignia etc on uniforms in old photographs.
The April meeting is again by Chris showing how to access old Newspapers at the British Library - this is a joint meeting with our Local History Group. Subjects/visits for the other meetings are in the pipeline.
