What we do

We are slowly working our way through the history of this vast and complex country in roughly chronological order, trying to gain an overview of how the country developed. In June, we talked about the early European settlers and by February we have reached the Lewis and Clark expedition 1804 - with the development of American English and of the slave trade amongst the subjects discussed in between.

At each meeting, one or two of our members start us off with a presentation and then there is plenty of time for questions – and quite often some surprising answers! In the light of what’s come up during the session, we then chose the topic for next time.

It is a mixed group, with some members having a very wide field of interest and knowledge, others a more general interest in the topic and others with a specialist interest in one or two particular periods or events. We have already had some lively discussions and the group is very informal and good fun.

New members are very welcome to join us – to lead a session, to contribute to the discussion or to just listen to what others have to say.

If you would like further information, please contact the Coordinator, Mary Christian.

Reports

July 2009
So far we have looked at:
May – everyday life of the Plains Indians and the vital role that the buffalo played in all aspects of their lives.
June – early European settlement on the East Coast.
July – the people who were already living there when the Europeans and other settlers arrived.

Please note that meetings time and days will change in October. Meetings will be held at 2.00pm on Thursdays 15 October and 19 November.
