What we do

We are slowly working our way through the history of this vast and complex country in roughly chronological order, trying to gain an overview of how the country developed.  Amongst the topics we have covered so far are the early European settlers, the Lewis and Clark expedition of 1804, the development of American English, the War of Independence and the slave trade.  After our summer break, we shall be discussing the Mexican War of 1846 (September) and the battles and removal of the Native Americans from the Eastern States (October).  Then we’ll be ready to tackle the Civil War.

At each meeting, one or two of our members start us off with a presentation and then there is plenty of time for questions – and quite often some surprising answers! In the light of what’s come up during the session, we then chose the topic for next time.

It is a mixed group, with some members having a very wide field of interest and knowledge, others a more general interest in the topic and others with a specialist interest in one or two particular periods or events. We have already had some lively discussions and the group is very informal and good fun.

New members are very welcome to join us – to lead a session, to contribute to the discussion or to just listen to what others have to say.

If you would like further information, please contact the Coordinator, Mary Christian.
